{"id":801,"date":"2021-10-09T03:53:01","date_gmt":"2021-10-09T03:53:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/debateleague.bridgeportedu.net\/?page_id=801"},"modified":"2026-02-19T18:03:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T18:03:34","slug":"tournament-results","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/debateleague.bridgeportedu.net\/index.php\/tournament-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Tournament Results"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Koskoff, Koskoff &amp; Beider Black History Month Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our tenth annual Black History Month Debate saw Discovery Magnet\u2019s Jaden Graham &amp; Akhil Mannava took home the Koskoff Trophy in prevailing over John Winthrop\u2019s Hanh Thach &amp; Avery Rosado on the resolution This House Believes that affirmative action remains necessary to address racial inequalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the high school debate, Harding\u2019s Matt &amp; Zyrene Lazatin prevailed in a very close and hard fought match over Fairchild Wheeler\u2019s Keli Keddo &amp; Bernadette Kudaisi on the resolution This House Would uphold the ruling of the US Supreme Court in Brnovich v The Democratic National Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results January 28, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><em><strong>Martin Luther King Day Debate<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fifth annual Martin Luther King Day Debate saw Park City Prep&#8217;s Haudrey Joseph and Sashay Hutchinson defeat High Horison Magnet&#8217;s Adetomiwa Kudaisi and Leah Holleran for the championship, on the resolution&nbsp;<em>This House Believes, civil disobedience is a moral obligation in the face of unjust laws.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tournament Results November 14, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Native American Heritage Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth annual Native American Heritage Debate saw&nbsp; Winthrop&#8217;s Hanh Thach and Christie Cyprien defeat Park City Prep&#8217;s Elijah Elliott and Haudrey Joseph on the resolution: This House believes the U.S. would have been morally justified in refusing to expand westward to avoid the forced migration of Native Americans<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results November 11th, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Veterans Day Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third annual Veterans Day debate, hosted by Harry B. Floyd Middle School, concluded with <strong>High Horizons<\/strong> securing a victory over Flood. Arguing as the Government, High Horizons successfully defended the resolution that &#8220;<strong>The draft is more democratic than a volunteer military<\/strong>&#8221; against the Opposition&#8217;s arguments from the Flood team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results October 23rd, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Hispanic Heritage Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Park City Prep&#8217;s team, Elijah Elliott and Sashay Hutchinson, won the 2025 Hispanic Heritage Debate, defeating Ishika Gadkar-Wilcox and Erika Cid-Ramos of Caesar Batalla. The debate, hosted by the Liceo Cubano de Bridgeport, centered on the resolution: &#8220;This House supports statehood for Puerto Rico.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results May 10, 2025&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Championship Tournament<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bridgeport Public Schools Debate League wrapped its 11th season with a championship tournament at Discovery Magnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>40 debaters competed in three rounds, culminating with semifinalists from Discovery Magnet, Park City Prep, and two teams from Harry B. Flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the final round, Flood\u2019s Dalia Colon &amp; Violet Varner edged out Discovery\u2019s Renesh Srinivasan &amp; Akhil Mannava in a close match to win the title!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best Speaker medals were earned by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gold: Mathew Marquez (High Horizons)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Silver: Riley Wolfert (Harry B. Flood)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bronze: Michael Vasquez (Harry B. Flood)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results May 1, 2025&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Law Day Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the eighth annual Law Day Debate Winthrop\u2019s Bah\u2019rayn Allen and Hanh Thach claimed victory over High Horizon\u2019s Mathew Marquez and Glenroy Wallace. The debate featured a current topic for the resolution:&nbsp;<strong><em>This House Believes all DEI initiatives are unconstitutional.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>After the debate, the debaters and student audience enjoyed breakfast and a panel discussion led by attorneys Ernie Teitell and John Bohannon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results March 29, 2025&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Women\u2019s History Month Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations to Bah\u2019rayn Allen and Christie Cyprien from Winthrop for claiming victory in the all-female Women\u2019s History Month tournament. &nbsp;They triumphed over Haudrey Joseph &amp; Kalea West from Park City Prep in an epic championship match<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey to the finals included standout performances from London Mill &amp; Levenita Vazquez-DeJesus of Marin, and Sujood Awad &amp; Addyson Folds of Discovery, who made it to the semi-finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This tournament also showcased the incredibly talented of teams from Cesar Batalla, High Horizons, and Tisdale School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results March 20, 2025&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><em><strong>Women&#8217;s History Month Debate<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Senate Chambers of the State Capital Hartford, Cesar Batalla&#8217;s Ishika Wilcox and Markeila Campbell triumphed over Park City Prep&#8217;s Haudrey Joseph and Sashay Hutchinson to win the Women&#8217;s History Month Debate trophy, on the resolution&nbsp;<em>This House Believes that mainstream media perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results February 24, 2025&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><strong><em>Koskoff, Koskoff &amp; Beider Black History Month Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our ninth annual Black History Month Debate saw Park City Prep\u2019s Haudrey Joseph &amp; Elijah Elliott prevail over High Horizon\u2019s Matthew Marque &amp; Glenroy Wallace on the resolution&nbsp;<em>This House Believes hate speech should be protected under freedom of speech laws<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the alumni debate,  Bridgeport Alumni Jenson Rodrigues Pellot &amp; Isabella Elliott<em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;prevailed in a very close and hard fought match over the New Haven Urban Debate League team of Janet Fan and Linda Chen<em>&nbsp;on the resolution This House Would uphold the ruling in the US Supreme Court case, Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The debate was held at the Margaret Morton Government Center in Bridgeport, in front of a full house. The middle school winning team was presented with the inaugural Koskoff trophy in honor of our generous sponsor Koskoff, Koskoff and Beider law firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results January 17, 2025&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><em><strong>Magnet Cup<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Jan.17, the sixth annual Magnet Cup was held at Discovery Magnet School in front of a student audience. High Horizon\u2019s Matthew Marquez and Glenroy Wallace&nbsp;defeated Discovery Magnet\u2019s team on the resolution:&nbsp;<em>&nbsp;This House Would mandate vaccines for all school aged children.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results January 16, 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><em><strong>Martin Luther King Day Debate<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth annual Martin Luther King Day Debate saw Harry B. Flood&#8217;s Dalia Colon and Riley Wolfert defeat Discovery Magnet&#8217;s Jaden Graham and Akhil Mannava for the championship, on the resolution&nbsp;<em>This House Believes, civil disobedience in a democracy is morally justified.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tournament Results December 5, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098\"><em><strong>Native American Heritage Debate<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third annual Native American Heritage Debate saw Park City Prep&#8217;s Elijah Elliott and Kalea West defeat Winthrop&#8217;s Luri de Souza &amp; Avery Rosado&nbsp;for the championship, on the resolution:&nbsp;<em>This House Believes that gas and oil pipelines should not pass&nbsp;through Native American lands.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results November 11, 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#0d3098;font-size:16px\"><strong><em>Veterans Day Debate<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2024 Veterans Day Debate Jetti Tisdale\u2019s Bianha Robinson, and Alanise Segarra defeated Renesh Srinivasan and &nbsp;Akhilesh Mannava from Discovery Magnet on the resolution&nbsp;<em>This House Would ban women from serving in combat.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tournament Results October 15, 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#12398f\"><strong>Hispanic Heritage Debate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2024 Hispanic Heritage Debate John Winthrop\u2019s Bah\u2019rayn Allen and Iuri De Souza defeated Renesh Srinivasan and Ivan Ortiz from Discovery Magnet! on the resolution This House Believes the United States Government should provide a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. The debate took place and was hosted by the<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Tournament Results October 3, 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the inaugural Library Debate, sponsored by the Pequot Library, Discovery Magnet\u2019s Jaden Graham and Akhilesh Mannava defeated Park City Prep\u2019s Sashay Hutchinson and Haudrey Joseph on the resolution, This House Believes parents should be able to ban books from schools and libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Tournament Results May 11, 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>League Championship<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bridgeport Public Schools Debate League welcomed 20 teams to our tenth annual league championship. After five rounds, Harry B. Flood, in their first year of competition, defeated Park City Prep for the league title. Flood was represented by Zara Wong and Ethan Leonard.
